La Place de la Bastille dates from 1803. The genius of Liberty, at the top of the 47 m column that commemorates the 1830 revolution, dominates the square. A symbol of left-wing rallies and demonstrations, the Bastille, where the prison of sinister memory once stood, is bordered by the Bastille Opera House and the Arsenal basin. It is the meeting point of the 4th, 11th and 12th arrondissements.
